Firmness is determined by compression, not density. To avoid overly hard cushions or sinking mattresses, check the compression or Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) number. Compression refers to the number of pounds needed to compress a piece of foam by 25% and have it bounce back to its original thickness. For instance, a 4" thick piece of foam that requires 33 lbs to compress it down 1" and return to 4" has a 33 lb compression rating or ILD. All foam sheets are sold per sheet, not by the yard. When opening the package, use a ballpoint pen or pencil instead of a box cutter to prevent damage. The foam is durable, lasting 7 to 10 years.
