Foam with a high density has a compression rate of 44lbs, providing the perfect balance of cushioning and stiffness. It remains soft while retaining its firmness, ensuring support for sitting without excessive compression. Firmness is determined by compression, not density. To avoid overly hard cushions or sinking mattresses, check the compression or ILD number. Compression denotes the pounds needed to compress foam by 25% and return it to its original thickness. For instance, a 4" thick piece needing 33 lbs to compress 1" and rebound to 4" has a 33 lb compression rating or ILD - Indentation Load Deflection. Foam sheets are sold per sheet, not yard, and should be opened with a ballpoint pen or pencil, not a box cutter. Expect a lifespan of 7 to 10 years.
